Motive AscentShell Jacket
Outdoor Research has just released a new Motive AscentShell™ Jacket, and in this review, we’ll take a good look at what it has to other outdoor lovers. First off, the Motive AscentShell Jacket in three different color options for both women and men. Secondly, the jacket offers a host of features that we love; Waterproof, Windproof, Fully Seam-Taped, Breathable, Air Permeable, and Movement-Mirroring Stretch capability. Despite all of these features, the jacket remains lightweight and focused on performance.
Motive AscentShell Performance Features
As we mentioned in the introduction, the jacket is very lightweight; If what you need is a light, streamlined rain jacket built specifically for active outdoor use, then the OR Motive AscentShell™ Jacket will appeal.
AscentShell Technology
Outdoor Research used their propriety fabric technology AscentShell™ 3L to construct the new jacket, a 100% polyester 50D mechanical stretch plain-weave with 100% polyester 30D knit backer. AscentShell™ is a waterproof, breathable three-layer fabric that improves comfort levels during physical activity.
AscentShell™ is made using the electrospinning process, where the charged polymers get fixed to a grounded surface. When gathered up, those polymers form a unique breathable membrane that allows sweat vapors out but stops water from coming in.
Why Not Use GORE-TEX?
Are you about to ask where the GORE-TEX is on this jacket? Well, while GORE-TEX is best if you want the most durable waterproof protection. However, it won’t be as comfortable, breathable, or air permeable as AscentShell™. For certain activities, GORE-TEX is the go-to option; however, for more vigorous activities, AscentShell™ is the better option. You won’t hear that crunchy sound when moving as you do with GORE-TEX jackets, and you’ll also appreciate the extraordinary range and freedom of movement.
Motive AscentShell Jacket Design
The cuffs and hood use a cinched binding that creates a tight seal to keep cold weather and wind chills out. Your fit will be complete using the drawcord hem and the hook and loop closures on the cuffs. Furthermore, the 3-layer waterproof shell features mechanical stretching, so your movement is never restricted when hiking, climbing, or doing another outdoor activity.
You’ll also find plenty of critical features necessary on a performance jacket, such as a key clip, carabiner loop, internal front storm flap, and an array of pockets, including a chest pocket.
